Secret Millionaire – Hi Dominic I have just watched your 'Secret Millionaire' and was so moved by the people you met in Peckham. I went to school there and it wasn't a nice place 20 years ago. I am so glad you helped Billy and his family no one should have to put up with the things he has. Billy deserved a break and I so hope he is doing well and one day he will become the 'Secret Millionaire' Best wishes Jen

Help with essay. Info on Dominic List – HI Lisa My father is also an entrepreneur and started his own series of businesses 30 years ago, so it has been in my family before and I have grown up with it. However, I am one of four children and the only one to have started my own business so it doesn't run in family's always. As a child I always had an interest in technology and would always try and mend anything in the house that was broken, such as the TV, toaster of washing machine. This fuelled my passion for engineering and ultimately what took me to Plymouth to get a degree in Design, Technology and Business. My first career job saw me work in a big mobile company and I felt all the frustrations that you feel in these large outfits, namely all the internal politics and the frustration of dealing with a manager that takes all the glory for your hard work. I moved around within a few companies in the mobile space and then latterly into the IT space and always felt similar frustrations that my ideas were either not listened too or were taken by management as their own. Finally in 2002 after 5 years of working for other people, I was ready to leave and start up on my own. However although I was very knowledgeable about the telecoms and IT solutions I was planning to sell and my ability to do so, I had little understanding in the financial running of a company. I put a business plan together and was getting ready to strike out on my own when I was introduced to a business partner. We set up Converged Solutions in September 2002 as a joint business in the Telecoms marketplace. However after nearly 3 years I had to walk away from the business. My business partner was just too difficult to deal with as he did not understand the benefits of good customer service or how to manage suppliers. This was heartbreaking for me as I had put nearly 3 years of blood sweat and tears into this company and walked away with only £30,000 settlement to show for it. I however was now determined to go it alone and very soon afterwards at the start of 2006 I started Comtact ltd, a customer focused IT and Telecoms company which this year should turnover £6 million, having mor than doubled in size every year since beginning. I think my motivation comes from within, it is almost like a fire that burns inside of me. I set myself very high goals to achieve and I work with dogged determination to achieve them, whether these are daily goals or long term strategic goals. Is there anything else you need to know Lisa?

Help with essay. Info on Dominic List – Hello Mr List, My essay is due in next week. Do you think that you will be able to supply me with a little information about yourself? I understand that you are a busy man but it would be appreciated. At the least, would you be able to possibly supply me with an understanding on what motivated you to start up your own business? Did you spot a gap in the market or exploit the fact that the demand was already there? Was you determined to start up your own business rather than work for someone? Was it money that motivated you to suceed? If there were any times when you wanted to give up or if the risks seemed too huge, what kept you on track and motivated to succeed? I appreciate your time Lisa Fitzpatrick

Help with essay. Info on Dominic List – I have given this a lot of thought and although an interview would be a fantastic option, I am not sure that it is a feasible one because the distance to travel would prove difficult for me and there is limited time to complete the essay. A telephone interview may be a possibility if there is a time suitable for both of us, although with 4 young sons, I and a full time degree, I am very limited for time and I am sure this would be the same for you. However, if you could let me know times that you would be available for a telephone discussion, I will attempt to call during the specified times. My children are on half term next week and I will not be at university then so maybe something could be arranged for then? I could get someone to take the boys out for a while so I could concentrate. Failing this, the most suitable solution would be if you could provide details about yourself along the lines of those mentioned previously. Let me know what you think would be best based on the above. Thank you again Lisa

Help with essay. Info on Dominic List – Thank you very much!!! If I tell you the content that I need to include in my essay, you can decide whether or not you can help. After identifying the entrepreneur of my choice (you!) I need to link entrepreneurial theory to that person. I need to discuss what you/your business has done for the UK economy (so in your case I guess that involves the number of people that you have employed etc). I need to look at what motivated you to become an entrepreneur (eg, whether you needed to do it (eg edundancy or financial hardship) or whether it was your desire and drive that lead to your decisions orboth). If there were any times when you wanted to give up or if the risks seemed to be too huge at any point that you didnt know whether or not to continue, what kept you on track and motivated to succeed? I will also need to try and decide whether you were innovating/ seeking change or relying on increasing consumption of products or services that were already on offer at the time. Any of your views on this subject would be appreciated. I would also like to let you know that your experiences on the, 'Secret Millionnaire' really touched my heart. I think that what you did with those youngsters, and are going to continue to do, is a real tribute to your own character and I think its just a shame that there are not more people out there like you. The streets of London are not somewhere many would feel safe raising their children now (which is why I moved fromthere with my own 4 sons to kent) but at least for those youngsters in Peckham there is now hope. Well done you!! Thanks again. Lisa

Help with essay. Info on Dominic List – Hi, I would like to get in touch with Mr List to ask him if he could supply me with some information about himself. I am a second year degree student studying Business Management at Canterbury Christ Church University in Broadstairs. For our Entrepreneurship module, we have been asked to write about an entrepreneur of our choice. Having watched the Secret Millionaire and being inspired by Mr List, I have chosen to write my essay about him. What I am after is some background information on Mr List and to find out what inspired him to start his business. For example, did he feel that this was something that he had to do (for money, family etc) or did he start up his business for other reasons? Has he always been entrepreneurial or was this something that developed because of his upbringing? I hope that he does not mind supplying me with this information, but having trawled the internet, I have found that there is not enough information that I can use for the purposes of my essay. I am due to start writing this essay now and the hand in date is the beginning of November. I appreciate that he is very busy, but I hope he can find a little time to supply me with a few details. Any information in relation to Mr List and his views on entrepreneurship and his own experiences would be hugely beneficial to me. Kind regards Lisa Fitzpatrick

Is this help available in Denmark too? – Hi Dominic. Great to finally meet someone like you in this hard economy. We appreciate what you do for others. I have gone 3 yrs with a dream, hoping that a door will open for me, but to no avail. My plan is to set up a network marketing business from home, so i can live out my dream as a missionary who helps the less priviledged in other parts of the world. I am trying to save money to start the business, but i am presently jobless and living on welfare and the money i get from the states is hardly enough to pay my accomodation bills and logistics. Even my bank won't lend me money. I have marketing experience and the skills to make money, but the only thing holding me back from reaching my goals is the need for capital. I am asking for a helping hand, a sponsor or a joint venture partner. And I would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you in advance. The money needed is $5000 and it will be spent on: Business start up package Telephone line fax machine & printer Website development Advertising I already have a computer, so any remaining money will be put towards advertising for more customers. Thank you once again.

Re:Well Done Dominic – Hi Dominic thanks for taking time out to reply,I whole heatedly agree with you sentiments,I'm glad the guys are getting on and finally have some help in their lives.I have tried to help several people in the past, not financially but with a bit of guidance and and moral support. As for motorsport I run a Group A Subaru Impreza ( find attached pic),but as a Firefighter I don't get to do as many events as I would like, but I,m a lot luckier than a lot of other people to even own one!I will watch with anticipation to see how things progress and if I can help in anyway do not hesitate to get in touch ,thanks for replying take care Colin

Re: Well Done Dominic – Many thanks for getting in touch following the show. Your kind words mean a lot to me and it's always nice to get some positive words said about yourself. I must say I found the experience to be very positive overall, although a real emotional rollercoaster as you can probably imagine. What really struck me is that although you do hear a lot about the bad things that go on in the press, you never hear a lot (or anything) about all the good work that is taking place. I times I felt very down about these peoples experiences but it was also heartening to find that there are a lot of people working in these communities who are giving their all in an effort to improve the lives of others. I’ve always been a firm believer in treating others as you would like to be treated. I also now see that we should all go out of our way to help in whatever small way we can in improving the lives of those people around us. What struck me is that these problems can be self perpetuating. The more we fear going out into the streets the more the streets become deserted and no go areas. I know we don’t have the weather here but I’ve always admired the more continental approach you see when you go to Spain for example and everyone, young and old, is out on the streets. We used to be like this but seem now to be too stuck in front of our TV’s too much to go out and meet local friends and neighbours these days and generally keep an eye on things.Really I didn’t do a lot to help and would like to do a lot more. I think that these issues do need a lot more of a community approach to solve problems like these. Less paperwork for our Police, perhaps tougher sentencing would help, but more importantly we can all help on a day to day basis to help out our local communities. The real stars of the shows were Billy, Ethan and Andre. All of whom have had tough upbringings but have managed, with the support of others in the community, to not only get themselves back on track but to go on to help others around them in their own ways.Just as an update to the guys stories so far Billy – is in my office next week to discuss whether college or work experience is his best way forward. Ethan – is already holding down three jobs but is looking to improve his earning potential and will be joining some of my guys for some IT training. Andre – is ploughing on with the Youth Club and Quiet room so all looking good there. You mentioned you were into motorsport, what do you compete in? Thanks once again for taking the time to get in touch Best regards Dominic List
